About Me
Welcome to my classroom at First Flight High School! This is my fifteenth year of teaching and I am beginning my seventh year at First Flight. My teaching career has led me across North Carolina, from Winston-Salem to Mocksville to Lake Norman to Raleigh to the Outer Banks, and I am delighted to be a First Flight Nighthawk. For access to my Google Classroom website, please e-mail me so that I can add you to a class.
I am a Teaching Fellows graduate of UNC-Asheville and received National Board certification in English/Language Arts in 2009; I am also a 2016 Book Love Foundation grant recipient, a 2017 Snapdragon Foundation grant recipient, a 2017 runner-up for the Random House Teacher Award for Literacy, a 2017-2018 Dare County Innovative Teacher, and a member of the DCS Digital Design Team. I am especially honored to be First Flight High School's 2019 Teacher of the Year! This year, I am teaching English 1, English 2, and Honors English 2, in addition to serving as the junior class adviser, prom sponsor, Project LIT book club sponsor, and director for the StageKraft theatre program. Over the past few summers, I've led students and parents on EF trips to Belize and Costa Rica; please contact me if you're interested in joining us on an educational and adventurous Caribbean trip in June 2020!
I'm an avid reader, writer, traveler, and gymnastics fan, and nothing makes me happier than being on the beach with a great book. I am a firm advocate of independent choice reading in the English classroom and am always building my classroom library to include more diverse book offerings for my students. I truly have the best job in the world - teaching high school gives me incredible opportunities to teach some of the most interesting and multi-talented people I could ever hope to meet!
