Nighthawk News Magazine
The award-winning Nighthawk News Magazine and its sister publication, NighthawkNews.com, are produced by students enrolled in FFHS journalism classes. These students strive to provide informative and accurate coverage of individuals and events within the school and the Dare County community. The publication is funded through advertising sales.
Our students annually attend journalism conventions at the state, regional and national level, and for the past six years the North Carolina High School Journalist of the Year contest has honored an editor of the Nighthawk News staff as either the first-place winner or a finalist: Mary Pat Thompson in 2017, Arabella Saunders in 2018, Hannah Ellington in 2019, Emmy Trivette in 2020, Cassie Honeycutt in 2021, Maren Ingram and Maggie McNinch in 2022, and Emmy Benton and Taylor Newton in 2023. The newspaper is advised by Steve Hanf.
